Day 9: Houston Open at Memorial Park Golf Course - Brandon Foertsch

Image
Today was the big day: The Houston Open! We arrived at the Memorial Golf Course at 9:30, and entered with very little crowd. The morning was beautiful, and at the start of our journey around the course, we followed Chris Gotterup, the #10 player on the tour. He was on a back-nine heater, and we got super close to a shot out of the rough on hole #18. He made it onto the green  Before lunch, we caught Keith Mitchell on Hole #6 making a difficult chip onto a slopy green. We were right up at the ropes. Here is the video of his chip: Lunch was at a Becks Prime tent, where we indulged in $20 cheeseburgers and $8 fries. I love Becks Prime, but these pre-made and packaged Becks Prime burgers were sub-par. Anyways, the group was hungry, and lunch set us up for the hotter afternoon. In the afternoon, our only goal was to follow Min Woo Lee, my favorite golfer, for as long as we could. There was a large crowd around him, as he was the winner of the 2025 Memorial Open. Min Woo Lee is a young g...

On day 8, we got to school and at exactly 8:30, we left for FM Law Park to play the golf course again, we split up into 3 different groups, just as the day before, but this time it was groups of different people. The groups were Brandon, Aidric, Declan, and Theo, the other Group was Maestra, Mr. Zhou, Chase, and Tory, and the last group was Federico, Madeline, Colin, and me. We did the groups like this because some of the first group of boys are on the golf team, and they have a tournament next Monday.                                                     (Federico hitting off the tee on the first hole) Brandons group started first and then my group went second and then maestras group went last. All of the groups finished all 9 holes allthough the first two groups finished pretty early and the last group finished like an hour after. After that we jus...

Day 5: Friday March 20th, By Colin Favard

To end our first week of our Golf M term in the morning we read chapter 4 of “The second part of the swing.” The book was teaching us about the different motions of where our hands should be during the swing, and how to utilize the lower body that’s leading the movement without relying on your shoulders.  (Brandon showing us rotation) Brandon gave us some disclosure saying it’s all about rotation so it comes all in one motion not letting your arms traject how you are going to hit the ball. Overall the book emphasizes lateral movement of the hips, rotation, and less reliance on our arms or shoulders to educate us on the fundamentals. Next up we went back to the golf course called first tee once again where we would be doing a drill with the iron, and the driver. Coach Nick was teaching us the correct stances to use when holding each club, and Braedon was demonstrating that to us with a couple of swings. Then we all tried to replicate this drill.  The driver required your...

Day 7: Tuesday March 24th- Madeleine Genzer

On day 7, the golf group started bright and early by Aidric giving us a lesson on how to go over how to keep track of our scores while on the golf course.  After going over this for about 15 minutes, we loaded the bus and left around 8:40 for FM Law Park to play the 9 holes! Right as we arrived at FM Law Park, we realized that we had the entire place mainly to ourselves, as the pros had something going on and weren't there.  Right as we got off the bus, we got in a circle and started to stretch before splitting up into 3 groups to play, and then we all ended up on the golf course shortly after to play!                                                                            (Below, you can see us stretching)        ...

Day 6: Monday March 23rd - Chase Welsh

On our 6th day of our Golf M-term, we finally got to put all that we learned to use at Top Golf!  Our results of the Golf terms Quiz, as well as my Test, where I got 25/25 and a smiley face!      As we first arrived at school at 8:30, of course, Brandon gave us a test focusing on the Golf terms we had learned throughout the first week of our M-term. We had 30 minutes to study our golf term sheets from the week before. As our study time had come to an end at 9, we all focused, wished each other good luck, and started. I am pretty good at memorization and tried to pay good attention this week, so I got 25/25 and a smiley face, along with Declan, Ms. Novak, and Federico (I'm not counting Brandon since he made the test). Then, once we had gotten our scores back, we set off to Top Golf!  This is us arriving at Top Golf!     Probably one of the most exciting and fun events we have had during our Golf M-Term was Top Golf, finally getting to show our new knowl...

Day 4: Thursday March 19th, by Tory Moore

March 19th, 2026 Brandon at the driving range  When it came to our fourth day of our Golf M-term, our day started off a little longer than the previous. This was because we not only went over the next chapter in our Ben Hogan reading but also further discussed three more rules that we took note of on our Golf Rules Tracking Log.  When it came to our reading, this Chapter in the Ben Hogan book went over how to position a swing and the importance of one's backswing. The chapter had also discussed a sort of pre swing routine called the Waggle. My main take away that I took from this reading was when it detailed how one's swing should start at the hands then move through the arms, shoulders, then the waist. It had also mentioned how far one should turn their shoulders when taking a swing.  Ben Hogan "The First Part of The Swing" chapter     Ben Hogan "The First Part of The Swing" chapter When it came to the rules we discussed for the Golf Rules Tracking Log, w...

Day 3, Wednesday, March 18th, by Theo Killoran

Today we started our day out by reading our book, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons . We covered chapter 2, which went through the stance needed for proper form, especially in the arms and elbows. After that, Brandon showed us the proper way to use your arms and hands and elbows when lining up your swing. (Aidric lining up his elbows and fixing the postion of his arms in his stance) After that, we left the school around 9:35 and went to First tee F.M Law park, and started our morning there with a drill to help us with chipping with accuracy and correct power. In the drill, people split into groups of 3, where they would try to chip a ball into a square region, or a circle with the hole inside of the square region for points, and whoever had the most points in the group won. After that game, we went over to the driving range and started off by hitting with your wedge, just going for a warmup and for accuracy.  (coach Brandon and coach Nick teachi...
